How circadian lighting shapes your sleep, mood and focus, and how to design for it

Of all the environmental aspects shaping your health, whether at home, in the office, or any other indoor space, light may be the most powerful and the most misunderstood. It sets your body clock, and with it your sleep, your mood, and how well you think. Here is how it works, and how a home can be built around it.

We evolved under one lighting scheme: bright, blue-rich sunlight all day, and near-darkness at night, broken only by fire. Every system in the body learned to read that rhythm. Then, during the last century, we inverted it. We now spend our days indoors under light far dimmer than the sky, and our evenings under light bright enough to once have meant midday. Our biology has not caught up.

          How light runs your clock

Deep in the brain sits a master clock that keeps the whole body on a roughly 24-hour schedule. Its main way of knowing the time comes through your eyes, from a set of cells in the retina that respond to light, and to blue wavelengths most of all. This has been well established since the early 2000s. Those cells do not help you see; their job is to tell your brain whether it is day or night. Get that signal right and the things downstream – sleep, alertness, hormones – tend to fall into place. Get it wrong and they drift.

          Sleep

This is the best-understood part. In the evening, bright and especially blue-rich light suppresses melatonin, the hormone that prepares you for sleep, and pushes your clock later. In the morning, bright light does the opposite: it anchors the clock and, hours later, helps you fall asleep on time. So a good night often begins with a bright morning. Most homes get both halves wrong, too dim by day and too bright by night.

          Mood

Light and mood are tied together more tightly than we tend to assume. The clearest evidence is bright-light therapy for seasonal depression, a well-established treatment. Beyond that specific case, low daytime light exposure is associated with lower mood, and while the broader claims are still being refined, the direction is consistent: more bright light during the day tends to lift how people feel. A dim, sunless home is not only harder to see in; over months, it can weigh on you.

          Focus and the mind

Daytime light also affects how sharply you think. Brighter light during working hours is linked to better alertness and cognitive performance, which is why a well-lit morning space does more for the day than another coffee. The evidence here is supported rather than fully settled, so I hold it a little more lightly than the sleep science, but the practical advice points the same way: get real light on your eyes early.

Why "how bright" misses the point

Here's where most advice goes wrong. We measure light in lux, a number built around how bright things look to the eye. But the cells that run your clock do not care about that number. They respond to only one slice of the spectrum, the blue-green part, so two lamps can read the same in lux and send completely different messages to your body clock. Researchers use another measure for this, melanopic EDI (m-EDI), which weights light by how much it actually stimulates those cells. That is the number that matters, and it is almost never the one printed on the box.

And it’s not only about the bulb. What counts is the light that reaches your eyes, not the light in the room. A bright fixture overhead, straight in your line of sight, sends a far stronger signal than the same light from a low lamp beside you, angled away. This is why placement matters as much as the bulb itself: in the evening, light should sit low and out of your direct view; in the morning, daylight should reach your eyes easily. Where a light sits can count as much as its color or intensity.

A problem of design, not willpower

You cannot behave your way out of a badly lit home, but it’s possible to design one better aligned with our circadian clocks. The orientation of the rooms, the amount of light they receive, morning routines aligned with where the sun hits, and of course the position, spectrum, intensity, and variation of every source of artificial light. Outdoors on a clear day your eyes receive tens of thousands of lux, and, because daylight is the reference for m-EDI, a melanopic dose of the same order. Researchers recommend a daytime minimum of about 250 m-EDI at the eye, and a typical room, even with sun through the window, often falls short of it. At night the gap flips: outdoors you'd have almost none, while a normally lit room can still deliver 20 or more, well above the evening target of under 10. Good design can help shrink the gaps without any additional effort on your part.

          How I design with light

Designing with light means both making the most of the available natural light and selecting artificial light sources that are most closely aligned with circadian rhythms.

Concretely, that means whenever possible I orient bedrooms towards the east, to maximize the morning sun, and when windows are replaced I choose models with more glass surface than standard renovation options. For artificial lighting, I source the best options available in terms of color and intensity, ensuring they are flicker-free and dimmable via a centralized automation system. When they are available, I propose table lamps and other evening lighting with low levels of blue-spectrum light. The Longevity Audit is when I check whether your lighting is currently working for or against you. From there comes the design and optimizations. And none of this is at war with beauty. Light is also the most powerful tool a designer has for atmosphere, so the light that serves your clock and the light that makes a room feel wonderful are, more often than not, the same light.

Where you can start right now

You don't need a renovation to begin. Get outside, or beside an open window, within an hour of waking. Work near daylight. Take frequent short breaks outdoors. In the evening, drop the overhead lights in favor of low, warm lamps, and dim what you can. Invest in blackout curtains for your bedroom. Tonight, notice how bright your rooms are after dark, and how dim they are at noon. You will see the problem for yourself.

          A reminder

Light is more than decoration. It is one of the oldest signals your body knows how to read, and it is reading it right now. Designed well, a home speaks to that signal all day: bright when you need to be awake, soft when you need to rest, and beautiful throughout.

So here is the question worth sitting with. Across a whole day, is the light in your home telling your body the truth about what time it is?

The Healthy Bedroom

Your bedroom shapes how you sleep. A healthy bedroom design gets the light, temperature, air, humidity and materials right. Here is how, and where to start.

          Where longevity interior design starts

Regularly getting a full night of deep, restorative sleep is essential for living a healthier, longer life - and the design of the room you sleep in is critical to attaining it. Here are the invisible factors that decide whether your bedroom is working for or against you, and how to fix them.

You do the work : you pay attention to what, and when, you eat and drink; you exercise; stay off your screens for an hour before bed and have a regular schedule. And still, some nights, sleep does not come, or it comes and does not hold. If that sounds familiar, there is a fair chance the problem isn’t you. It’s the room.

We spend roughly a third of our lives in the bedroom, the one room whose entire job is to let the body repair itself. Yet it’s usually the most poorly designed room in the house, optimized for how it looks by day rather than how it works at night. If you are going to improve only one room for your long-term health, this is the one to choose, because so much of that health is built through good sleep.

The invisible influences on your sleep

          Bedroom temperature.

To fall asleep, your core body temperature has to drop by about a degree, and has to stay lower throughout the night for restorative sleep. The research shows that for most people, the ideal bedroom temperature for sleep is between 16 to 19°C. A room that is too warm impedes the cooling process, and disrupts sleep more than a too-cool room does.

          Light and your body clock.

The research on circadian rhythms clearly shows that for optimal sleep, the body needs intense white light during the day, low warm light with as little blue spectrum as possible in the hours before bed, and total darkness during sleep. Most bedrooms don’t come close to this.

          Sound and deep sleep.

The World Health Organization recommends keeping a bedroom at or below 30 decibels for good sleep. That is very quiet, quieter than most small fans. Even noise you have stopped consciously noticing keeps the nervous system working through the night, and the result is lighter, more broken sleep.

          Air quality.

You breathe the bedroom's air for eight hours straight, most often with the door closed and windows sealed. A poorly ventilated room - particularly one filled with furniture and materials that are off-gassing - lets carbon dioxide and humidity climb overnight, leaving you groggy the next day.

          Humidity and health.

Too dry and you wake thirsty or coughing. Too humid and the room feels warmer than it is, with a real risk of mold, which is a health problem well beyond sleep. Somewhere around 40 to 60% is the range to aim for.

          Your phone and disturbances.

This one is less about electromagnetic fields, which stay debated, and more about behaviour. A phone on the nightstand pulls at your attention even when you are not using it: the notifications, the habit of checking, the simple knowledge that it is there. Studies link a phone in the bedroom to worse sleep, mostly through use and interruption rather than anything the device does while you sleep. The cleanest fix is to charge it in another room.

How I design bedrooms that support your sleep

During an in-person longevity audit of your bedroom, I measure all the factors above, as well as look at the direction your bedroom windows face, the temperature control system, the quality of the outdoor air around you, the exterior noise level, the type of furnishings and their materials, the placement of pipes and electrical outlets in your bedroom and surrounding walls, and your window treatments.

Once I know what’s working, and what isn’t, the design follows. To the extent technically possible, I’ll make sure your bedroom is optimized to do what a bedroom is really for: help you sleep, and feel wonderful to be in. That means ideally positioning it facing east to take advantage of morning sunlight, with independent temperature control, blackout shades, VOC-free sound-absorbing materials like a dense rug and an upholstered headboard, nighttables free from phones and other digital devices, circadian-aligned, low-blue-emitting lighting, and, where necessary, air filtration and humidity regulation systems to ensure that you can breathe easy, in every sense of the term. And of course, an optimized layout with plenty of storage, because visual clutter increases stress – which negatively impacts sleep.

None of this comes at the expense of how the room looks. A bedroom should be as calming to the eye as it is to sleep in, and I design the health and the beauty together.

Where you can start right now

You don’t need a renovation to begin. If you already have a zoned temperature control system, lower the temperature a degree or two and see how the week goes. Designate a charging station in the hallway or the kitchen, and leave your phone there at night. Open the windows for 5 - 10 minutes to refresh the air in your room before going to bed. If the outside noise level permits, keep them open while you sleep. Replace the lamps next to your bed with low-intensity, warm (2500k or below) light - ideally incandescent or special low-blue-emitting LED bulbs. This evening, walk the room in the dark and find every point of light, and then deal with them one by one. None of that costs anything, and it addresses the levers that matter most.

          A reminder

The room supports your sleep. The quietest, coolest, best-ventilated, darkest bedroom in the world cannot compensate for poor diet, chronic stress, a screen in bed until midnight, or a schedule that shifts every day. The design does its part. Your habits do the rest.

So here is the question worth sitting with. Your bedroom, as it is tonight: is it working with your sleep, or against it?

A home can be beautiful and, in ways you never see, work against the people who live in it. Here is where beauty and health can quietly diverge, and how good design brings them back together.

For more than 20 years, I've designed beautiful interiors. The way a room looks, the way light falls across it, the way it feels to come home to, all of that matters to me, and it always will. But in the last two decades in exceptional homes, I've learned something else, too. That a room can be flawless to the eye and, quietly, work against the person living in it.

Picture a living room you would photograph, or have already seen in the pages of a magazine. A sculptural sofa. A glass and metal coffee table. Marble underfoot and covering the kitchen island. A row of sculptural pendants overhead. It is beautiful. It may also be releasing formaldehyde from the sofa's frame and foam, bouncing sound around until the room is subtly tiring to sit in, and lighting everyone in it with a spectrum that tells their bodies it is still midday when it's actually ten at night.

None of that shows up in a photograph, and that's the whole problem. We have been taught to judge a home almost entirely by how it looks, because looks are the part we can see. The rest, the part that actually shapes how we sleep, breathe and feel, stays invisible until it starts to cost us our energy, our mood and our healthspan.

Where a beautiful home and a healthy one can diverge

          The materials.

A gorgeous sofa can be built on a particleboard frame, filled with polyurethane foam and wrapped in a stain-treated fabric. Each of these can release formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds into the air you breathe at home. VOCs are recognised indoor-air pollutants; formaldehyde is classified as carcinogenic to humans by the WHO's cancer agency, the IARC. The off-gassing is strongest in the first months and eases over time, though it rarely stops entirely. Beautiful, and off-gassing. The look of a piece, and even its price tag, tells you nothing about what it’s made of.

          The surfaces.

Hard, reflective materials like stone, glass and large planes of lacquer are some of the most striking in design. They also send sound bouncing around a room through reverberation, raising its noise level. The World Health Organization recognises chronic environmental noise as a real burden on health. How much a mildly noisy room costs you over years is better described as supported than precisely settled, but the direction is not in doubt. Used everywhere, the same materials that make a room look calm can make it feel anything but.

          The light.

Statement lighting is often chosen for how the fixture looks, not for the light it casts. Yet we have known since the early 2000s that blue-wavelength light in the evening suppresses melatonin and pushes the body clock later, and even warm, dimmable LEDs emit more blue than most people expect. Lighting a home as brightly at night as during the day works quietly against everyone's sleep. The most beautiful fixture in the room can be the least kind to the body.

          You don't have to choose

Here's the thing, beauty and health are not opponents. A sofa can be beautiful and made of materials that don't pollute your air. A room can be both quiet and stunning at once. Light can be flattering and still respect your body clock. These goals only collide when health is treated as an afterthought, bolted on at the end. When it is there from the first sketch, the two simply become one brief.

That is how I work. Before I design, I spend time in the home you already have, during an in-person Longevity Audit, where, alongside discussing your needs, your current pain points and your aspirations for the home, I measure the things you can't see: the air, the light, the sound, the water. Then the design follows, holding beauty and health in the same hand. The result doesn't look like a compromise. It looks like a beautiful home that also, behind the scenes, takes care of the people in it.

Where you can start right now

You can begin to read your own home this way today. Look at your largest pieces of furniture and ask what they are actually made of. Notice whether a room echoes when you clap your hands. Check your thermostat: is your bedroom the same temperature as the rest of your home, or cooler? Using the slow-motion video mode on your phone, film your lights: do you see them flicker? In the evening, notice whether your lighting is as bright as it is during the day. None of this means tearing anything out. It means seeing the invisible layer that a beautiful photograph will never show you.

          A reminder

Beauty is not the enemy of a healthy home. It is half of it. The other half is everything you don't see, working for you or against you while you live your life. The best homes I know are the ones where you never have to notice the second half, because it was designed in from the start.

So here is the question worth sitting with. Your home, the one you love the look of: is it as good to you as it is to look at?

Your kitchen quietly decides what you eat, the air you breathe and who gathers around you. Here's how to design one that works for your health.

How the design of one room shapes what you eat, how you gather, and how well you age

The kitchen is where your health is quietly decided every day: what you eat, the air you breathe, the water you drink, and whether the people you love gather around you. Designed well, it becomes one of the most powerful health interventions in the whole home.

We tend to think of the kitchen as the room where design shows off: the cabinetry, the stone, the beautiful hardware. It is all of that, and kitchens are one of my favorite spaces to design. But it is also one of the two rooms – together with the bedroom – where more of your current and future health is decided than anywhere else. What you eat begins here. So does the air you breathe, the water you drink, and, more than we like to admit, whether the people you love end up gathered around you or not. Of all the rooms in your home, the kitchen is the one where good design does the most for how well you live, and how well you age.

          The air you cook in

Cooking is one of the largest sources of pollution inside a home. Searing, frying and grilling release fine particles (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide straight into the air you breathe, which is why a powerful hood that vents outdoors, rather than one that filters and recirculates, matters more than almost any other appliance. For passionate cooks, it is the single most important, and most overlooked, health decision in a kitchen.

          The materials you prepare on

Then there is the cabinetry, which is usually the largest amount of manufactured material in the home. Most cabinetry is made with particleboard and MDF, which are bound with formaldehyde-based resins that off-gas over time. Formaldehyde is a recognised indoor-air pollutant. Then there’s the question of the cabinet surface, or veneer, and the glue used to attach it to the panel, both of which can also contain formaldehyde and other VOCs. Many kitchens today are open to the living area, meaning that the off-gassing of the cabinetry impacts the air in your entire home. Healthier options exist, but the decision to use them has to be made early in the design process.

          The water you drink

Swiss tap water is among the best in the world, but it still isn't perfect. Some trace contaminants and pharmaceutical residues pass through treatment, and the pipes between the plant and your glass have their say too. So filtration here is a marginal gain rather than a must-have, and I'd test your water before deciding anything. Where it makes sense, a (remineralized) reverse-osmosis tap integrated into the design, with still and sparkling water on demand, is the kind of upgrade that quietly earns its place at a sink you use twenty times a day.

The kitchen that makes the healthy choice the easy one

Nutrition is a design question long before it is a willpower question. A kitchen with generous, well-lit prep space makes cooking from scratch a pleasure rather than a chore. Storage that keeps everyday ingredients within reach, and a bowl of fruit within arm’s reach, does more for how a household eats than any resolution. None of this is dramatic science; it is simply designing so that the easy thing and the good thing become the same thing. Over years, that is where a kitchen earns its keep.

          The most underrated ingredient: people

Decades of research place the strength of our social connections among the more powerful predictors of how long, and how well, we live. That belongs in a conversation about kitchens, because today the kitchen is where a household actually gathers. A layout that lets someone sit at the island with a drink while you cook, or lets two people work side by side without colliding, is doing quiet work for your health, not just for your evenings. I design kitchens to pull people in, not to keep the cook alone.

The same room also has to age with you. Drawers instead of low cupboards, pull-down shelves in upper cabinets, good task lighting, a place to sit, a dishwasher placed higher so you don’t have to bend: small decisions, made now, keep a kitchen easy and safe to use as mobility inevitably changes. Longevity design is as much about the next thirty years as the next dinner party.

How I design a kitchen for health

It starts, as always, with an in-person Longevity Audit. I measure the things you can't see, the air and the water, and I observe how you actually live in the room: how you cook, who joins you, where the light falls, what frustrates you today. Then the design follows, blending health, functionality and aesthetics: the ventilation and the materials and the water, yes, but also the layout, the finishes and the feeling of the room. The result should be a kitchen you find beautiful and want to spend time in. The health is simply built in, where you never have to think about it.

Where you can start right now

You don't need a renovation to begin. Run your hood while you cook, and for a few minutes after you’ve finished. Find out whether it vents outside or merely recirculates, because that one fact changes everything. Crack a window while you sear. Look at what your cabinets and countertops are actually made of. Keep the fruit where you'll see it, and the treats where you won't. And before buying any water filter, have your tap water tested, so you're solving a real problem rather than an imagined one.

          A reminder

The kitchen is the most-used room in most homes, and the one where design touches your health most directly, several times a day. It shapes what you eat, what you breathe, what you drink, and who you share it all with. That is a lot of quiet influence for one room, and it is almost entirely designable.

So here is the question worth sitting with. Is your kitchen feeding your health, or just your appetite?

Votre chambre influence votre sommeil.
